JUST A WOMAN

I'm a woman.

I'm a modern woman in today's society

How exactly does the society view me as a woman

What do I think of myself as a woman

Well, the society has these little boxes, these little spaces, these tittles that they want me to fit into.

Homemaker, child bearer, submissive wife

According to the society, the perfect age for me as a woman to get married is before 28, the perfect age for kids is before 30

My life as a woman should revolve around putting my kids first and making my husband happy.

What if that is not what I want as a woman?

What if I don't want marriage. Kids, not even on my mind.

What if I want to break from all these societal expectations.

But the biggest question I should be asking myself is, what comes after the no?

What comes after I choose to walk a different path?

Should I be judged for wanting more than just a home, a husband who can provide and kids?

For being different?

Should I be judged for wanting something different?

For saying no?

Does my opinion matter?

Does me having an opinion about the kind of life I want to live make it any different.

I'm glad to be part of the women saying no. The women making change. The women speaking for themselves. The women who just want to live their lives.

So fuck the God damn society, because I'm not a submissive wife, a homemaker and I most definitely do not like kids. I choose me, I choose the life I wanna live, I choose how I wanna live.

My name is Amondi Odhiambo and I'm a proud, black loud woman. Just a woman.
